Henry David Thoreau basically said that our earthly possessions over take us and define what we do. I find this to be true and false. I have determined that it all depends on the object and the situation the person is in.
To prove that some possessions can consume our actions I have an example to prove this side of the statement. I think alcoholism is a great example of possessions taking over our actions. When I was in health we talked about how alcoholism takes over your body and makes you need to have the alcohol. It forces you to need more but, this only shows one side.
These material possessions don't have to rule over your actions. I'll use myself as an example for this side. I play a lot of video games and some people would probably even say I'm addicted to them but, I'm not. I've been spending a lot more time lately reading and doing homework than playing video games. I often read on my spare time and in fact you rarely ever see me without a book so, as you can see, I don't let my possessions dominate my life and I believe that everyone else can release themselves from their chains of their addiction to their possessions.
